On Thursday 10th April, the London Market Forums (LMF) hosted an energising and insightful Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Advisory Group Workshop at Allied World’s office in the heart of EC3. The session brought together an impressive group of young professionals from across the insurance market, all with a shared ambition: to shape a future-ready educational programme that reflects the needs, challenges and aspirations of tomorrow’s leaders.
Facilitated by LMF’s Roger Oldham, the workshop opened with a clear goal – to co-create fresh and engaging content ideas for the upcoming LOT educational calendar, including lunchtime learning sessions and major events. Roger emphasised the value of this initiative as an opportunity to build a programme by young professionals, for young professionals, ensuring each session delivers real, actionable insight that members can take back into their day jobs.
Attendees were invited to reflect on their own experiences and openly share what they felt was missing when they entered the industry – a theme that generated passionate and thought-provoking discussion. From the lack of exposure to diverse lines of business early on, to the importance of mentoring, confidence-building and access to role models, the group didn’t hold back in offering honest perspectives.
A significant part of the session focused on talent retention in the market. Many attendees spoke candidly about why graduates and junior professionals often leave their firms within a few years. We discussed the impact of hybrid working on junior engagement.
The rise of AI and digital tools naturally took centre stage. Attendees expressed both excitement and uncertainty about the role of generative AI, with many calling for practical education on the tools already being trialled across underwriting, claims, and HR. Participants also requested more sessions exploring emerging and niche lines of business – such as cyber, political risk, and environmental liability – areas where curiosity is high but access to real-world insight is limited.
As the group brainstormed future sessions, a vibrant list of ideas emerged which will form the basis for a programme of learning, education and collaboration over the coming months.
The LOT Advisory Group Workshop was more than just a discussion – it was a commitment to co-creating a programme that empowers the next generation of insurance leaders. With fresh perspectives, clear passion, and practical ideas on the table, the future of the Leaders of Tomorrow initiative looks brighter than ever.
We thank Allied World for hosting this Advisory Group session at their amazing EC3 offices in the Walkie Talkie.
Stay tuned for updates on the next sessions and how you can get involved.
