Roger OldhamFounder & Managing Director at London Market Forums - Machine Learning & Ai in underwriting - lessons learned in this evolving space
-
Machine Learning techniques and the associated supporting data sources are pervading all industries, not just financial services or insurance. There is the natural temptation to embrace these and turn them to a competitive advantage either through their use in underwriting or in other downstream processes such as claims to manage costs. Most likely, there will be some that turn out not to offer the leverage they promised (this has happened before), others will have repercussions, like having inherent bias. What are the stories to tell so far, what are the trends and forecasts for deploying such techniques within the insurance industry and underwriting and pricing in particular?
Speaker
Andrew CollinsHead of Business Solutions Insurance, International - EarnixOur guest speaker, Andrew Collins of Earnix, formerly of Willis Towers Watson, will talk through, at a high level, the interesting things happening now in the machine learning and AI arena against a backdrop of an industry built on both statistical robustness and human expert judgement.
- There's a lot to consider - Ethics and the use of Ai in underwriting
-
The use of Machine Learning and Ai in underwriting is not all plain sailing. There are a lot of considerations surrounding its use and whilst there may be business benefits for many, there are potential ethical and moral issues to consider, which may have a detrimental affect on a number of stakeholders in the insurance lifecycle and may run foul of regulatory principles designed to protect the customer. We are delighted to be joined by Dr Bogdan Vrusias of Amazon Web Services, a leading commentator on the subject of Ai and ML.

At this point in the session, we'll have our popular roundtable discussion where we'll get feedback and thoughts from all participants. You'll be able to share your own views and experiences, whether positive and negative and we'll debate the future value of using Ai/ML in harmony with traditional and conventional underwriting techniques and practices. By the end of the session you will have learned a lot and had the opportunity to contribute to this highly relevant discussion.
